Hey, my name is Megan or bbmars, I’m a DJ/Producer from Calgary, Canada.
What was your intention for your Excursions mix? How did you go about selecting music?
I went into creating this mix more impulsively than with intent to be honest. I’ll usually start with a track I’ve been binge
listening to, then get lost in it. I’ve learned I work better with no expectations, and to just trust the momentum and drive my creative energy gives me.
Who, or what, were your early passions and influences?
Aphex Twin has to be my greatest influence. The first time I heard Windowlicker, I can’t remember my age, but I just remember thinking how amazingly different the record was. It definitely pointed me in a certain direction musically.
How has your path, intentions or expectations changed as an artist since you started producing and/or DJing?
Along with life’s challenges, as I mature, my intentions and expectations have grown and changed with me. I’ve always thought the music I create, or that I’m attracted to, reflects my state of mind/being. Listening back, the majority of the music I was making, the music I was connecting with, I can’t relate to anymore. Which is actually great, because it’s one of those subtle reminders of growth.
I remember when I started DJing, I was all about pleasing the crowd - trying to figure out what everyone else wanted. That turned out to be toxic for my creative energy, and soon music started triggering stress. Producing wasn’t the same, this subliminal thought of “would people like this” kept inhibiting my process. That’s when I took some time off to try and understand why something that once meant so much to me, was now the cause of so much stress. I soon had a realization; I was kind of forgetting to ask myself what I like. Which seems so simple, but at the time, was a huge revelation. Currently, I’ve dropped all my expectations and I play/make music because, that’s what I love to do.
